Nicki Minaj nearly quit American Idol on Thursday night after fan voting landed one of her favorite contestants among the bottom two finalists.
When Ryan Seacrest revealed that Curtis Finch Jr. might be sent home, Minaj jumped out of her seat and appeared to storm off set, mouthing, “I’m done.”
The singer did eventually sit back down, but did not hesitate to share how she felt about the situation. “I definitely think Curtis should not be in the bottom two … Curtis, if you go home, I go home,” Minaj explained.
Curtis took to the stage to try and save his spot on the show, but unfortunately his rendition of R. Kelly‘s “I Believe I Can Fly” did not fly with the judges. In order to escape elimination, the aspiring singer needed a unanimous vote of confidence from all of the judges, but didn’t get it. “I think we needed an extra minute to discuss it,” Nicki told her co-stars as Curtis was sent packing.
Maybe Nicki just felt bad because Curtis’ performance was the one she missed when she was 15-minutes late to Wednesday night’s live taping of Idol. Whatever the case, it’s worth noting that despite her threats, Nicki didn’t actually quit the show as she promised if Curtis was sent home.
