Lamest Hip-Hop Beefs Of 2012, Courtesy Of Twitter

Hip-hop was built on competition. From KRS-One vs. MC Shan to LL Cool J vs. Kool Moe Dee to Biggie vs. ‘Pac to 50 Cent vs. Ja Rule, the genre that DJ Kool Herc built has always centered around the beef between two lyrically knuckled-up MCs. But with advent of the Internets, rap feuds have left the hallowed confines of the cipher to become lame tiffs in 140 characters or less. Through Twitter, rappers have repeatedly trolled us all with the most absurd “Tweefs” ever assembled. Here’s a look back at some of the most bizarre Twitter beefs of the year. (Shout out to Drake and Common for keeping their beef off social media.)

Meek Mill vs. Cassidy

Cassidy should win the “Reacher of the Year” Award for his repeated trolling of fellow Philly MC Meek Mill under the guise of setting up a freestyle battle. Meek already made it big with MMG. What could he possibly gain by battling an MC who’s 15 minutes of fame have long since passed? Cass needs to just stick to making songs like “Condom Style” and cease and desist on @-ing the Dreams and Nightmares spitter.

50 Cent vs. Floyd Mayweather

Breakups are hard. Especially when they’re executed on the ‘Net. Longtime BFFs 50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather aired each other out on Twitter this year and it wasn’t a pretty sight. For his part, Money May mocked Curtis Jackson’s declining record sales and posted some very pause-worthy IG pics of 50 swimming in his cash like Scrooge McDuck. It was enough to lure in some of 50’s rap rivals into the fray. As it turns out, though, the joke was on us. The G-Unit general claimed that it was all a publicity stunt.

French Montana vs. 50 Cent

Like clockwork, 50 Cent found another rapper to pick on. After word got back to 50 that French Montana spoke on his combative ways with fellow MCs, the G-Unit general made it his mission to body the “Pop That” MC via Twitter. The Moroccan born spitter must be taking cues from Rick Ross, though, because none of 50’s flurry of social media punches have managed to deliver a knockout blow. Montana is still rockin’ Versace and poppin’ bottle with models while anticipating the release of his debut album, Excuse My French.

Chris Brown vs. Brian McKnight/ Chris Brown vs. Jenny Johnson

If all the menial Twitter feuds are to be believed, everybody hates Chris. Chris Brown, that is. Over the course of the past year, Chris Breezy got into Tweefs with “followers” like it was a bodily function. First, it was Brian McKnight. Why would CB get into it with a man old enough to be his R&B father? Just let McKnight have “One Last Cry” and move on, Chris.

Then there was the one with comedienne Jenny Johnson. To be fair, Johnson trolled Brown for three years with disrespectful @-mentions before finally getting a rise out of him when she responded to his tweet with this: “I know! Being a worthless piece of s— can really age a person.” From there, the ish hit the fan. The insults and threats got to be too much for Chris, because he suspended his Twitter account again. Social media ain’t for everyone. Maybe it’s time Chris Brown or anyone still left on the PR team representing Chris Brown realized that.

Azealia Banks vs T.I. and Iggy Azalea

Azealia vs. Azalea? These two femcees with eerily similar rap names concocted a Twitter beef in these Internet streets that, frankly, no one really cared about. It stemmed from Iggy’s inclusion on XXL’s Freshman cover. Frustrated with being excluded from the hip-hop mag’s annual rookie co-sign cover, Banks took to Twitter to blast the Grand Hustle MC for her verse on “Drugs:” “Iggy Azalea on the XXL freshman list is all wrong. How can you endorse a white woman who called herself a “runaway slave master?” The “212” rapper tried to drag T.I. into the tiff but just came off as someone with an extreme case of sour grapes. Moral of the story? Don’t knock someone else’s shine, just work on getting your own.
